Responding v Reacting

“Action and reaction, ebb and flow, trial and error, change - this is the rhythm of living. Out of our over-confidence, fear; out of our fear, clearer vision, fresh hope. And out of hope, progress.”

Bruce Barton (American Congressman, 1886-1967)

“The ultimate test of whether you posses a sense of humor is your reaction when someone tells you you don’t.”

Frank Tyger

“A life of reaction is a life of slavery, intellectually and spiritually. One must fight for a life of action, not reaction.”

Rita Mae Brown

Elizabeth went MIA

When you find yourself up to your ears in mess, just clean it up.
Elizabeth McElrath

Well you guys have my most humble apologies for not showing up for the MMM today. I was actually working on posting my MMM when I lost my quote for the day and could not find it. I was searching the internet for it and trying to remain in control, when the phone rang. A client had just left out on a cruise Sunday morning, and in the middle of international waters with no passport, needed to get home. My world spun into an hour and a half of phone calls back and forth, trying to get this poor woman home. Once I was finished, I looked at the clock and it was after 1:00 pm CST. I immediately checked to find that everyone had given up on me.

During this period of time and the rest of the day as everything was in total chaos from pulling files and digging for phone numbers, I was trying to stay upbeat. My personality type tends to make me overly tough on myself, so I kept fighting the urge to beat myself up all day long for not keeping to my commitment. As I was thinking the words I quoted above came to mind. One of the little girls at our church used to constantly sing a song that went, “I’ve got to clean up…what I’ve messed up…and start my life over again. I’ve made up my mind, and I’m not wasting no more time.” That rang so true for me today. So I worked on this post, put my “big girl” pants on, and hoisted myself up by the bootstraps and got to it.

As a perfectionist, it is sometimes hard to accept that we are not all perfect; however, the fact is that we are not. The lady on the cruise, in hindsight, I am sure wishes she had took the time to get her passport. I wish that I had planned better for such an event to occur and had a backup plan. So we live and we learn. Now I am not sure how the lady handled it and if she chose to learn from it or to whine and complain about it. I am sure I will find out in the near future, but for now I am choosing to learn from my mistakes and get on with life and enjoy it.

Responsibility v Blame

“A sign of wisdom and maturity is when you come to terms with the realization that your decisions cause your rewards and consequences. You are responsible for your life, and your ultimate success depends on the choices you make.” Denis Waitley

Where in your life are you taking responsibility and where are you laying the blame on someone else? How much more powerful would you be if you took full responsibility for everything that happens in your life.

Old Habits Die Hard

We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.
John Dryden

First we form habits, then they form us. Conquer your bad habits, or they’ll eventually conquer you.
Dr. Rob Gilbert

Your net worth to the world is usually determined by what remains after your bad habits are subtracted from your good ones.
Benjamin Franklin

All of us have habits, both the good and the bad; however, not all of us are aware of all of our habits. Do you consider your routine a habit? Do your good habits outweigh the bad? Are you looking at ways to change your bad habits?

While structure and routine are extremely important in life and business, sometimes it is important to rethink and restructure and do away with the things that are not taking us where we need to be. Habits are hard to break and take time and work to get past, but the end result is worth all the work.

The Joy of Yielding and Dreaming

“I feel nothing but the accursed happiness I have dreaded all my life long: the happiness that comes as life goes, the happiness of yielding and dreaming instead of resisting and doing, the sweetness of the fruit that is going rotten.” George Bernand Shaw

I am not going to add my usual commentary here as I think this quote means different things to different people.
